The 500 hats of Miss Emma Crofts

I love a good hat/hairband. There is something so joyful about wearing something funny/ridiculous on your head. It makes everyone smile and takes people by surprise. These are just a few of the crazy headgear bits that I have.

My Book of the Year 2019

There are a lot of books to love in this world. I try to read as many books as I can, especially middle grade novels, so that I can share and recommend books to my students. When I was back in the UK over the summer, I picked up a pile of books from Waterstone's recommended reads display. This was one of them.

On the night of a terrible storm when Simon discovers a mysterious object that has lay hidden beneath a centuries-old tree, he instantly knows that it's special.

But that's not the half of it - because that doesn't even factor in how Simon met Judy, the search for Judy's missing father, the journey to Sweden, the crash, the fight, everyone they meet along the way, and the fact that, somehow, Simon's unexpected find turns out to be useful in the most truly unexpected way. - from Amazon.co.uk

The blurb doesn't give much away, and honestly I'm not sure any blurb could do this story justice. I am by no means a fast reader. Usually it takes me days or weeks to finish a book even if I'm really enjoying it. This one took me 6hrs to finish. I swear it's some sort of record for me. It was beautiful. Haunting and sad, but funny and sweet. I had no idea where it was taking me. All I knew was that I would follow it wherever it went. The writing is exceptional.

Since I finished it, I've recommended it to practically everyone I know. I have even lent my own copy to some of my students (the copy for the library hasn't arrived yet) because I can't wait for them to read it. I am worried I'll be crushed if they don't like it, but if they do, BOY HOWDY will I be happy.

If you haven't read it, GO GET A COPY! I can't wait to see what Toby Ibbotson comes up with next.

Librarians' Knowledge Sharing Workshop 2019 - Alice Smith KL

The last four days have been a whirlwind for library tours, workshops and networking. I'm still trying to process everything I saw and heard. For now I'm uploading some of the photos I took as a reminder of everything that happened.

Halloween!

This year I was the big bad wolf in grandma's clothing! It was lots of fun pretending to eat the little kids 😂

Gladstone's Library

My mother and I are both librarians so when we spend time together we like to visit libraries. This summer I've been lucky to have lots of time with her. This trip we took to Gladstone's library in Hawarden, Wales, has been the highlight of my summer holidays. Beautiful surroundings and a stunning library to boot. Life is happiness indeed!
